Some people like a little bit of guidance, something to get the mind going. Here are some great books which can give you ideas, pointers, hints and project ideas.

The Mosaic Book by Peggy Vance and Celia Goodrick-Clarke Special Photography by Clay Perry published by Trafalgar Square Publishing Full Color, Softcover, 128 pg Everything you need to know about making mosaics, how to make them, what you need, project ideas, and step by step instructions including how to break your plates (like we need help with that!). It's a beautiful, detailed, and full color survey of the art of mosaics on a grand scale with history, instructions, and projects ranging from small objects to home exteriors. -$30.00
Making Mosaics - Designs, Techniques & Projects by Leslie Dierks Hardcover, 128 pgs. Along with lots of inspirational pictures, this book has 12 short projects in the back complete with picture, clear step-by-step instructions and materials needed.This is the best book we have for beginners. - $24.95
Quick & Easy Mosaics-- Innovative Projects & Techniques by Mariarita Macchiavelli Softcover, 157 pg, $14.95 This book starts with a few chapters about history and supplies and then goes stright into projects. Each project has a section titled "necessary materials," a picture of the finished project and step by step instructions. The second part of the book has other "design ideas." This section talks about using the base to help determine the type of design you do. The next part of the book is called "decorating ideas." It shows other possibilities of things to do a mosaic on. And last but not least there is a small pattern section. It is a good book, especially if you are a bit familiar with doing mosaics.
Mosaics- Essential Techniques and Classic Projects by Fran Soler Hardcover, 125 pg, $24.95 Although this is a great book for inspiration, it is not as good an instruction book. There is a small section about materials, but the emphasis is on planning your project. They talk a bit about color theory, about drawing your design. It seems like there is an emphasis on the historical influences of mosaics. The project section of the book is divided into chapters based on the historical influences: Classical, Mexican, Islamic, Eastern and Modern. One of the nicest things about this book, in my opinion, is that the projects are shown in different color combinations. It helps you visualize how different a color change that make a piece feel.
Mosaics made easy edited by Susan and Martin Penny Hardcover, 61 pg, $12.95 This book is geared for the person who wants to do a mosaic this weekend without a lot of investigation and practice. It covers the basics, and not a whole lot more. The basics are explained well, but there isn't anything that is really inspirational.
