Dye Explanation page

You will find a lot of different options in the world of surface design. This page is designed to direct you to the correct dye for your project. (Feel free to look around but if you want to go right to the place, this page should help you out!).

  • Question: What if my item is a combo? Answer: It depends on the percentages. If something is 50% silk and 50% rayon, you can try just using the Acid dyes and see what you end up with. You may want to over dye it with the Procion dyes to get a deeper more consistant color.
  • Question: What if I don't see my fiber listed here? Answer: If you are looking at something that has polyester, acetate or acrylic in it, you are kind of out of luck. To our knowledge there is nothing that will permanently dye these fibers. You can use tints, but there is no real thing.
  • Question: What if I don't know the fiber? Can I guess? Answer: You can try, but sometimes it is really difficult to tell.
  • Question: My couch (carpet, car seat... you fill in the blank) is discolored. What can I use? Answer: The dyes we sell all require that you submerge the object... so the answer is "no." Sorry. If you are just trying to camoflage a spot, you can try brushing on Dynaflow It is not a dye, but in an imperfect world sometimes it solves problems.
  • Question: My _____ (kid, husband, wife, grandmother, dog....) spilled bleach on my favorite piece of clothing. What can I do? Answer: There is no real good way of spot dyeing. The best thing to do is 1)wash the garment so that all of the bleach is out. 2) Put a little bit of the dye mixture on the lighter spot (or stain) and give it a head start. 3) redye the entire garment in a darker color. Most of the time rejuvinating the color can make the imperfection less noticeable. The spot will always be lighter, but may not be noticeable unless you point it out.

If you have any questions dyes, quantities, or anything else we carry, all you have to do is ask. We'll try to help you out.
