What is oilcloth? The recent Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) prohibits oilcloth garments such as bibs and aprons or toys for children under age 12. This is due to the level of phthalates (a softener present in all vinyl) in the PVC vinyl of which oilcloth is made. It is constructed of vinyl with a poly/cotton scrim backing, printed by rotogravure.

Oilcloth is waterproof and stain resistant. Fading may occur under direct sunlight for extended periods of time since the oilcloth does not contain a UV inhibitor. The oilcloth is a 10.3oz weight vinyl.
How do I care for oilcloth?
You can wipe oilcloth clean using a warm, soapy sponge then dry it off with a soft cloth. Machine washing is not suggested. Store folded or rolled. Any creases from folding will smooth out over time-- faster in a warm environment. If you want to speed the process up you could use the steam setting on an iron with a pressing cloth between the iron and the oilcloth (DO NOT TOUCH THE IRON TO THE OILCLOTH).
What can I use oilcloth for? Here are just some ideas-- table covering, lunch bags, dog food mat, high-chair mat, book cover, beach bag, shelf liner, apron, wallet..... what ever you would like to be pretty and waterproof!
How wide is the oilcloth? What does it cost?
What if I need a piece that is wider than 47"?
Can I use Oilcloth outside?
Oilcloth is perfect for outside. Overtime the colors will fade-- how long it takes will depend on your particular environment.
With more than 30 different patterns (and different colors in each of those) it was time for us to break it up into categories. Click on the category of your interest and see all of your choices. Remember, that all flowers are not created equal. There are girly flowers and there are flowers that your whole family would think are prefect for the kitchen table. Don't judge a book by its cover, or an oilcloth folder by its name!

The oilcloth is 47" wide. It costs $7.50 per yard. Fabric is sold by the running yard. If you purchase one yard of oilcloth you will be sent a piece that is 36" by 47". Fabric is sold in 1/4 yard increments, with a 1/2 yard minimum per fabric. Orders under 1/2 yard will automatically be increased to the minimum.
If you need a lot of oilcloth you can buy it by the roll for $81.00. Each roll is 12 yards long. By buying the full roll you save 10%. In order to be eligible for this price, you must purchase 12 yards of one style, one color, one piece. Orders for full rolls may take up to two weeks to ship. To order by the roll use the second box.
Oilcloth can be sewn using a size 16 sharp needle on your machine. If you are going to sew it by hand, I would nice heavy duty needle and a thimble. To strenghen your seams, you may want to seal them with a bead of silicone glue (available at most art supply or hardware stores). Silicone glue dries clear and flexible.
How do I hem oilcloth?
One of wonderful qualities of oilcloth is that the raw edges will not unravel or fray. If you are doing a tablecloth you can just cut a nice straight edge, or use pinking shears for a slightly decorative edge.
