Snap tape

Snap tape is great for long expanses where you need a closure. Using snap tape will save you loads of time. The beauty of it is that you get a strip of snaps that are sewn on like you would sew a trim. Because it is sewn on as a strip it is less noticeable than if you were to apply each snap individually.
snap tape

These are plastic snaps. Good for pillows or clothing where you do not want to add stiffness. Currently available in black only. The snaps are 1/4" in diameter with 1" between them. The tape is 3/4" wide.

$3.59 per yard. Sold in yard increments. Shipping within the US is included.

    Hook and eye tape

    hook and eye

This is a great way to close something and still have it be feminine. The tape is sewn into or behind the placket so that the hooks and eyes are allowed to meet in the center. There is 1" between each set of hook and eyes. This is not a good thing to use on something which will have tension on it (like a corset).

$9.95 per yard. Sold in yard increments. Shipping within the US is included.

    Button Loop

    button loop

Traditionally this has been used on the back of wedding gowns as a decorative element. The braided trim is off white. The loops are spaced 1/2" apart and are elastic so they fit snug around the buttons. The great thing about this trim is that it allows you to have lots of little buttons close together but you don't have to go batty sewing all of the little buttonholes.

$2.10 per yard. Sold in yard increments. Shipping within the US is included.

    Eyelets and grommets

eyelet eyelet eyelet eyelet eyelet eyelet eyelet eyelet eyelet

These serve two purposes. First of all they are used to reinforce a hole that you have made. Second it becomes a decorative element.

Each size has its own metal setter. On a hard surface (concrete works best) you make a sandwich of the eyelet or grommet and the fabric. The setter goes on top and you use your handy hammer to mush it all together. Typically it takes betwen 4 and 7 whacks of the hammer to set the eyelet. Once it is set it should not spin.

    A couple of hints
  • You need to have a hole for the eyelet to go through. Use a craft knife to make a little "x" hole. It is better for the hole to be a bit smaller than the post of the eyelet than too big.
  • If you are working on a very light weight fabric, you may need to put a couple of extra layers of padding. Grosgrain ribbon or twill tape work well.
  • Setting the eyelets is really quite simple. The key is to set them on a stable surface that doesn't vibrate when you use the hammer. I have found that a garage floor (although a bit uncomfortable on the knees) works best.

    Basting tapes and glues

    bastingbastingbastingbasting

Sometimes you may find that traditional basting (with a needle and thread) just won't work.

For example, when you are working on a fabric like PVC or leather which will remember every hole you put in it! That's when a basting tape may be just what you are looking for!

Wonder Tape-- A double sided transparent tape which can be stitched through. This will not gum up on needle and completely disappears in first washing. In hot or humid areas this is best store in the refrigerator (just make sure your family knows its not edible!).

    1/4" x 10 yards, $3.99

Basting tape--A scant 1 /8" width makes working is small areas easier. Tape is easily peeled away after stitching.

    1/8" x 5.5 yards, $2.49

Basting Glue-A fine needle-tip applicator allows you to put a precise line of temporary glue just where you want it. Adhesive washes out completely

    2oz , $5.09

    Sulky Brand Stabilizers!

These are a great tool to use to make that fabric do what you want it to. Stabilizers come in a variety of weights. Some are meant to remain with the fabric (for example as added stiffness in a totebag), while others are meant to disappear once they have helped you reach your goal (for example when used to aid in the making of an applique)
For more delicate fabrics you can dissolve the stabilizer in water and then brush on the solution to create your own liquid stiffener.

These are the sort of tool that have a world of possibilities. You just need to jump in and see how they can help you with your particular project.

    Here they are the options!

    Fuse-n-stitch
