Mask Making

This is a gauze that is impregnated with plaster ready to be used for your casting projects. Just wet it and apply it to the object. As it is drying is will shrink up ever so slightly allowing you to pull it carefully off of non-porous or semi-porous objects. If you are doing it on something that is very toothy or porous you might want to use a mold release first.

For more explanation of how to make a mask, check out our How to page

We carry 2 really good books about maskmaking
Maskmaking by Carole Sivin.
This is a great black and white book that starts with the history of masks and then describes (in great detail) different types of masks-- plaster, clay, paper, papier-mache, buckram, wire and celastic masks. Although you may not want to make all of these different masks, you can find techniques to use on your mask. There is also a section about masks and children. The pictures are quite helpful in this book.

Puppets and Masks-- Stage craft and Storytelling by Nan Rump
This is a wonderful book for anyone who works with kids. The book is very project oriented. For each project there is a description, a section about what you can do to prepare for the project, what the kids can do, and how to use the puppet of mask. There is a wide range of projects which could be adapted depending on the age of the kids, number of kids and how much time you have for the project.

Casting Kits These kits are wonderful gifts for the crafty person in your life. The kits contain everything to make the project. Once they plaster is dry you can finish it off with paint or leave it as is. You'll be amazed at how striking the finished products are. These projects really do celebrate the beauty of the human body.
